National Pekapeka Hui 2026

March 25 - 27 2026

We’re excited to be hosting the National Pekapeka Hui 2026 in Franklin.

Since the 2023 hui, our bat-conservation community in Aotearoa has grown in ambition and reach. We have more community groups active, more private landowners willing to engage, and more opportunities to integrate iwi / mana whenua knowledge with scientific research and applied practice. This 2026 hui aims to bring scientists, iwi, private landowners, community conservation practitioners and government agencies together in one forum - not just to share research, but to share people, knowledge, stories, tools and partnerships.

When: 25 -27th March, 2026.
Where: Rereteewhioi Marae, Waiuku

The National Bat Hui is coming to Franklin… and we’re hosting!

  • The National Pekapeka Hui will be held at Rereteewhioi Marae, located at 83 Tahurangatira Road, Karioitahi, in the Franklin area.

Rereteewhioi was established in the mid-1940s by Te Puea Herangi. Te Puea named it Rereteewhioi after seeing a skylark (whioi) flying overhead on the land where the marae now stands, near the home of her sister Hera Herangi.

The marae has strong connections to the Kiingitanga and remains an important gathering place for whaanau and kaupapa in the region.

Ngaa Kaitautoko | Our Sponsors

We’re grateful for the support behind the National Pekapeka Hui. This hui is made possible by the support of our awesome sponsors.

Their backing helps cover the real costs of running a three-day event, from venue and equipment to kai, speakers, and logistics. Some contribute financially, others donate goods or services, and many give their time and expertise behind the scenes.

It all adds up. Without that support, this hui wouldn’t happen.

If you’re interested in backing the kaupapa, get in touch with us at franklinbats@ecoquest.co.nz
